The Martha, Martha Poem
by MariFer Carmona

While taking a course called "The Way of Beauty" from the Theology of the Body Institute, I was inspired during my prayer time to write a poem based on my experience of a concept I learnt called "The Martha Martha Complex". The Martha Martha Complex is, essentially, society's struggle of being unable to rest due to the pressure of always having to "produce" and be busy, due to deep insecurity about our self-worth. It is loosely based on the passage in Luke's Gospel, when Jesus visits Bethany, and Martha feels overwhelmed and upset at Mary for sitting at Jesus' feet (Luke 10:38-42). After a year of writing this poem and much reflecting, I decided it was important to end it on a hopeful note, so I also highlighted Martha's growth and faithfulness in John 11:38-44. This poem has been a great blessing to me, so I share it in the hope that the Holy Spirit might speak to you as well:

Martha, Martha,

How busy you are

Always running

Always alone

You strive to please

Yourself to give

Yet in the toil

You don’t receive

Your heart is empty

Your body is tired

But from the turmoil

You don’t retire

You long for comfort

A little quiet

But when in silence

Resounding sirens

You try resting

But you cannot

Your mind is nesting

A million thoughts

While others relax

“You’re not allowed”

Serving’s your duty

Surely he’d frown!

Martha, Martha,

You’re worthy of more

The mistreatment of others

Isn’t your fault

It’s not your identity

Listen no more

Lies of the enemy

You are the Lord’s

He clothes you in dignity

He calls you his bride

He loves you deeply

Stand tall dear child

Martha, Martha,

How little you see

The one in front

Is the one you seek

Would you take time

From all the grime

Come sit instead

And rest your head?

Yet, you’re self relyin’

You can’t go deep

There’s only time

For pleasantries

You starve your soul

You’re overwhelmed

But in the end,

You served a friend?

Martha, Martha,

S’not what he wants

He’s wishing to heal you

Not hear you rant

Take a deep breath

Don’t you fret

He knows your hurts

So why perfect?

No need to haste

Come as you are

Slow down your pace

And you’ll go far

He’s not frigid

His love is tender

You are seen

Why not surrender?

Martha, Martha,

There’s hope for tomorrow

Entrust your regrets

He’ll quench your sorrow

The dream you dreamed

Won’t have to die

Let him transform it

Why not try?

Martha, Martha,

You’re not the saviour

Breathe in again

Then let it go

He’s not worried

So why are you?

Just be patient

Don’t get confused

You are growing

But it is slow

Just keep hoping

Grace will flow

Martha, Martha,

Don’t get discouraged

You WILL trust him

Have some courage

You are loved

He is pleased

You’re accepted

Remember this?

Focus on thanking

And growing in wonder

Beauty is calling

You’re really surrounded

Martha, Martha,

Look around you

Don’t you see, God’s

Tenderness for thee?

Look at the birds

in the sky

Or a baby’s

glimmering eyes

Do they not reveal

Exactly how he feels?

Does your heart not flutter,

Till it’s soft as butter?

So he sees you, and

Everyone around you

So he presumes

Hearts to be consumed

Tenderness flows freely

Do not find it eery

Let your heart expand

By his gracious hand.

Soon you will trust

Fully abandoned

Life giving faith

Glowing with ardor

Eyes will be opened

Wounds will be healed

But most important

You Will be Here

You’ll rest in His arms

Sweet hug from heaven

Peace overflowing

Heart fully leavened

You’ll hide in his Heart

at home Forever

Swimming in mercy

Always together.
